The 2019 Academy Awards have come and gone, with the usual fanfare and controversy surrounding this year’s best picture nominees. The Oscar for best picture went to “Green Book,” but what other films were nominated? And more importantly, how did they do at the box office?

Check out the worldwide box office numbers for 2018’s best movies.

‘Black Panther’ Earnings: $1.3B

Marvel’s Afro-futurist superhero movie killed it at the box office. “Black Panther” earned a domestic gross of just over $700 million, but its worldwide performance netted Marvel a total box office gross of $1.3 billion. Plus, the movie made a cool $202 million during its opening weekend. It is the highest-grossing film on this list, and it beat out the worldwide performance of best picture winner “Green Book” by over a billion.

Although the film did not win an Oscar for best picture, the fact that a comic-based movie garnered such recognition — it’s the first superhero film to be nominated for best picture — was seen as a milestone for many.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Earnings: $860.9M

The Queen biopic — or perhaps more accurately, the Freddie Mercury biopic — rocked audiences and scored a worldwide gross of nearly $861 million. The movie earned more than $213 million with American audiences.

Controversy surrounded the film since Bryan Singer, the director with several allegations of sexual misconduct against him, was originally tapped to direct the movie. The movie won awards for both film and sound editing.

The film stars Lady Gaga — actual birth date March 28, 1986 — and Bradley Cooper as two musicians struggling to navigate fame (Gaga) and obsolescence (Cooper).

‘Green Book’ Earnings: $144M

2018’s best picture scored a $144 million worldwide gross. Like “The Favourite,” the movie also had a limited opening weekend, in which it only made about $320,000. Once it got a wide release, though, its opening weekend numbers exploded to $5.5 million.

“Green Book” winning the award for best picture had some people feeling blue. But Spike Lee was seeing red when the Oscar winner was officially announced and attempted to exit the ceremony. “Green Book” has received criticism for its portrayal of race.

‘BlacKkKlansman’ Earnings: $90.6M

Spike Lee’s so-crazy-it’s-true story of a black cop infiltrating a KKK chapter made over $90 million worldwide. Over half of that comes from domestic ticket sales, which totaled over $48 million.

The movie might not have won best picture, but it nabbed an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. The award marked Spike Lee’s first competitive Academy Award.

‘The Favourite’ Earnings: $83.2M

“The Favourite” was a favorite for many filmgoers. Although an initial limited release might’ve hurt its box office potential, it still scored a respectable $83.2 million worldwide, with more than $50 million of it due to foreign interest in the film.

Olivia Colman, who plays an irascible version of Queen Anne in the movie, beat out Glenn Close to take home an award for best actress in a leading role.
